One thing I resent about the release program, is this whole "limited"deal .
How long has it been since the 1969 Fillmore West box has be out of print ? Yet you go to , say 2/28/69 on IA and you get ,
This show has been commercially released as "Fillmore West 1969: Complete Recordings"
The limited run thing is unfair, and unwise . I buy almost everything they put out, but there are some things that I couldn't get around to . If they are going delete it, or not print anymore, at least let the archive have it back to stream .
All this does is encourage people to get it "elsewhere " i.e torrents, burns, or bootlegs . If I can go to Dead.net and buy the show, well, fine pull it form the Archive, but don't put the show out for a few months , sell out on the print run, and then keep it off IA forever !

Exactly. If for some mysterious reason they feel a need to do Ltd Release, at least allow folks to stream later. Or, ideally, don't make the darned things Ltd Release. I don't get it; if they can't keep printing CDs eternally, OK, but why not make them downloadable purchases after a certain date?
I guess the Utterly Deadicated will find a way, but why set up barriers not just to the enjoyment of the music, but to the legal purchase of it (and hence their own profits)? I assume the Ltd Release thing is meant to drum up business, but if it would only be downloadable after a certain period of time, minus bonus tracks and not available again on CD, that would still jumpstart a lot of folks into making that purchase -- which is the point -- while also keeping money rolling in later.

Its pretty clear that GDP and/or Rhino are not real keen on downloadable music. Since the Rhino deal there was only one downloadable release and it was the whole shows from the first RT release. I can only assume that the business is not robust enough to cover the server costs. This would be consistent with their decision to go with limited releases and subscriptions to create demand. None of the rhino/gdp releases are available on the iTunes music store either. Funny thing is that Rhino does have downloadable music on its website so they aren't totally against the idea.
Speaking of the iTunes music store, if you do a search on the Grateful Dead you find some pretty scary things. Check out Yoga Pop Ups and their Yoga Tribute to the Grateful Dead! Here is the one available review:

As an ultra runner and cyclist, I listen to the dead for hours on end while exercising...So why exactly did someone think a fisher-price xylophone, tambourine and 1/2 speed pacing would yield a superior rendition of their music for yoga? Life is short, the catalog extensive, so listen to the real thing!
I sampled Touch of Grey and Shakedown Street. Pretty scary stuff. Its like bad muzak versions of the band. If there is a hell for deadheads, this is the soundtrack of eternal damnation.

A 'grate' point DD. I agree.
Like the 1969 Fillmore, I was excited to hear some '77
the other day, (on the fab IA) and ooops, I forgot that it was released as
"Winterland June 1977: The Complete Recordings", and silly
me..........didnt have the money to buy it, and still dont.
And yes, I am guilty of going 'elsewhere'. It was hard to
decide whether I should purchase the E 72 crate, or pay the
same for a roof over my head and running water for another month . hmmmmm. I know there are priorities, and goodness knows I would love to be able to buy everything put out, and Im extremely jealous of those who can, but come on...
at least keep a few copies back (to agree with your
'limited' deal DD), right? And along those lines, and I
know its been beaten to death here before, but dont get
me started on the Road Trips stuff. For folks like me,
that's what I can afford, and end up with really good
sounding 'pieces' of GD? pleeeeeeeeeeeeease.
You cant go to the crack house when you live in the poor house. Some people have Obama-care, Im stuck with I-dont-care.

an idea, but it goes against the business grain. I mean
people still have the ability (if they have the technology)
to get SBDs off here, but I dont, and we dont talk about that anyway. And yes, I do the torrent thing. But if I
want to hear a 12 min version of a Scarlet, Im not that
inclined to torrent the whole show and wait a day for it
to download, then get to that 12 minute song. Im inclined
to find it elsewhere.
